First Feeding!

Okay, so any tips on how to introduce food into a babies diet?? We started Brooklyn on a rice cereal last night and lets just say more ended up on her than in her mouth. She loved trying to grab the spoon and smacking her lips against it. She just didn't quite get the swallowing motion. Does it eventually come? She was a mess in the end and so were her parents. Parenting Rule #75 Do not bath a baby before a first feeding!!

  1. haha babies have to learn to swallow food, just like they have to learn everything else. Funny huh? you would never think you would have to teach your baby how to swallow and keep food in their mouth! Keep it up, she'll figure it out.

  2. Oh yeah, put some brown sugar or syrup or baby fruit in it to make it sweeter. She might like it better.

  4. Brooklyn is growing up so fast! Don't worry, she will get the hang of it and getting messy is all part of the learnign process!

I am not an expert but here is a little info about why it just takes time for babies to learn to swallow instead of push food out of their mouths. Babies have a tongue-thrust reflex (extrusion reflex) that they use to help drink a bottle or breastfeed and it also helps prevent them from choking on an object placed in their mouths. It will disappear on its own around four or five months of age.
The loss of the tongue-thrust reflex allows the tongue to participate in eating instead of pushing away solid foods. To safely swallow solid foods, the tongue needs to be able to transfer food from the front to the back of the mouth.

  5. LOL! wait until she eats her first biter biscuit! You pretty much have to hose down the whole kitchen! My mom taught me to put one of Baylor's hands around my side/back and then hold the other one down to his side (hope that makes sense) to feed him. Some people thought I was mean for not letting him play in it... but now it's great because he doesn't sit and mess with the food. After the first few times feeding him cereal, he picked up on it really well. He loves all the foods (veggies and fruits) just how they come. They think it's so tasty after just plain cereal. Good Luck!

  6. I usually mixed up the rice cereal with some watered down apple juice, white grape and pear juice work too. And yes, every parent wonders if their kid will ever be able to actually eat. Its totally normal for them to push 75-80% of the food out of their mouth while trying to swallow, or at least learn how to swallow. Spoon feeding can be a long and frustrating stage, but hang in there, it does end. You'll do great! I can't believe how big she is getting, she is so cute.
